How Have People Reconciled Nationalist and Non-Nationalist Loyalties?

An example of the reconciliation of national loyalties in Canada is the Statement of Reconciliation, which was developed from the verdict reached by the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. They concluded that the actions of governments towards the aboriginal people of Canada in the past, were wrong. The act of reconciliation was that the government admitted they were wrong and worked at settling land claims. However this process was a long one and not much change occurred. And considering how much was taken from them, I think a lot more could have been done, on the governments part, to restore these things that were taken from First Nations, like land and culture. Past governments have destroyed the relationship between Canada and the First Nations people who call it home, I believe that now, after admitting they were wrong, the government should make a better effort to repair this crucial relationship to the identity and nationalism of Canada.

How Have People Reconciled Contending Nationalist Loyalties?

When people coexist in one place there are bound to be conflicts as a result of different beliefs and values between the people. Sometimes these conflicts can be resolved, and sometimes they can't. An example of a resolution of this type of conflict were the treaties made between early Canadian governments and First Nations. However it was an unfair agreement, and now the Canadian government has begun to take steps of reconciliation in order to right the wrongs that past governments inflicted on the First Nations. This includes The Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, in which a group of aboriginal AND non-aboriginal people discussed and researched conflicts to resolve them. If these conflicts aren't resolved it can effect the nationalist loyalties of the First Nations, so reconciliation is an important thing.

-Tech. Connection 2-
Many factors have shaped French Nationalism. One of the most significant was the storming of the Bastille. This day -July 14- is still celebrated in France. In the time before the revolution, weather caused chaos in France's economy. A great drought wrecked many crops, raising the price of flour which in turn raised the price of bread to a price that the common people of France could not afford. They were already extremely poor because of high taxes, yet King Louis XVI still proposed to raise them higher. Louis' offer was rejected and inspired the creation of the National Assembly and Tennis Court Oath. And eventually the fall of the monarchy and then Declaration of Rights of Man and of the Citizen. When Napoleon became the leader of France he won many wars for France which strengthened French pride. Because of these intertwining events, France today has no monarchy, liberty, religious freedom and individual rights.
